What is the movie about? :: Violet (Meghann Fahy) had been suffering as she was unable to leave her alcoholic and abusive husband despite her being a therapist herself. But this had changed as the man committed suicide, but she was blamed for it, and people often told the stories about her killing her husband as she was unable to suffer his atrocities anymore, as even the neighbours could not stand the man. On an eventful day, after finishing daily work, she is startled by a metre reading man knocking on her window and she had guided him to the back of her home. Later, Violet decides to leave her young son Toby (Jacob Robinson) at home in the care of her younger sister Jen (Violett Beane) and go for her first date after the death of her husband. Jen makes sure that her sister wears the best clothes and manages to find her true love this time and get married to lead a good life. With everything set and with the best wishes of her sister, Violet reaches Palate, a grand restaurant at the top of a skyscraper for a date with a photographer named Henry (Brandon Sklenar), whom she has been messaging through a dating app.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: As Henry is late, she spends some time at the bar and meets Richard (Reed Diiamond), a little elderly man waiting on a blind date, Matt (Jeffery Self), a server on his first day at the restaurant, Cara (Gabrielle Ryan), the friendly bartender, Phil (Ed Weeks), the restaurant’s pianist, and Connor (Travis Nelson), a young man waiting for his sister. Henry reaches, and as they start their date, Violet begins receiving messages on her mobile phone through a short-rage texting system. These messages from this unknown user starts with memes which gradually become more threatening. Henry tells her that it could only be someone seated in their section of the restaurant as the range would only be that much. Despite Violet trying to ignore the drops, the crisis elevates as the unknown person asks her to check her home security cameras. As she checks for the same through camera, she finds Jen being knocked out by a masked man who locks Toby inside a room, and she is warned against telling everyone about it, as the boy would be killed if anyone comes to know about it.

And what more is to follow here as lives seem to be at stake with time running out? :: The messenger tells her that only by careful actions, her son will be saved, and warns her against leaving from the restaurant, as she is to continue her date. When she moves, it seems that the man knows, and as she moves into the toilet, she finds hidden cameras near the wash, and the same was also seen on the side of her table. She pretends to be scared of heights and ask for the table to be moved from their location with the city view to anywhere else. Henry manages to have the same done with the help of the staff, but she is forced to come back as the messenger asks her to return to the same seat or her child would die. They return to the same table, which the staff says was particularly chosen for them through a call, but both of them remember none of it. The messenger further instructs Violet to find a camera in Henry’s bag kept on a side and destroy its SD card. Violet manages to complete the job and finds out that Henry, who works for the city mayor, has photos which would serve as evidence against the man. But this would not be the last thing she will have to do to save her son. How long can she survive like this?

The defence of Drop :: The movie is powered by a fine performance from Meghann Fahy who drops the anchor with a performance that requires some fine skill, as she has to continue fighting against all odds with control over her actions as much as the emotions. Brandon Sklenar also provides some fine support here as he plays the next significant character. These characters are placed in a situation which does not go much about one and half hours, and with such a short run-time, the movie leaves one with no wasted time. There are some nice situations which feels more real than the others. The anxieties about digital life and surveillance feels very much real as we never really move away from the same, no matter how much we feel that this would not happen to us. The suspense and thrills we feel here are more like taken right out of a world that we know. There is also that emotional side related to the life of the main character. Then there is the stunning world of the restaurant with a view and the tension that something big is going to happen any time soon, and the audience are prepared for the same.

The claws of flaw :: When we think deeply about the movie, we can’t help feeling that the villain’s plan depends on the near-impossible, requiring the best of timing and perfect surveillance that stretches the willing suspension of disbelief at times – this happens in such an area where immense possibilities are there, and just going for the same in the usual manner and then trying to hide the evidence would have been the better options however we look at it. The idea that the main character, despite being a person with skills related to the mind decides to stay with her abusive and alcoholic husband who does not have the right state of mind makes us wonder what kind of skills she has in her field of psychology. The flashback which goes there is not that much either, and we never really go that deep into past, and yet there is so much of talk about the same. Then the finish seems to be done in a hurry as the revealing is done and then the chase happens as if they were just put there to end the film as soon as possible.

How it finishes :: Drop takes advantage of the fear of being watched digitally with no idea of who is doing the same; it is indeed one of the scariest feelings that one could have, as this has become an inevitable part of our life in one way or the other. Meghann Fahy carries the same tension while not really out of the character’s long trauma right on her shoulders. Her performance that stands apart makes sure that the emotional stakes feel raw and very much human, even when the technology around her tries to take over. It is to be noted that all of these happens in the restricted space of the top floor of a skyscraper where the restaurant is situated. There, it expertly turns an everyday social setting into a terrifying nightmare, and for the same, it needs the applause, as some of us might think twice about talking to a digital stranger too. It could have still become something more, but it chooses not to, as the terror lies a little too much in the messages and a video cam rather than on the main location in real space, and we should have had a little bit more of the main character’s past and a less quick journey in the final stages. But we have everything that ends well, and we are left with messages, which is very much fine.

Nothing Serious

Vampire Owl: Vampires do take everything seriously.

Vampire Bat: This is about humans not taking relationships seriously.

Vampire Owl: Well, for us, even the dirt in the graves are serious matter.

Vampire Bat: You are forgetting the dirt in the coffin.

Vampire Owl: Well, humans should at least take the planet seriously.

Vampire Bat: I have heard that they are all prepared to migrate to the next.

Vampire Owl: What? I hope they don’t choose our realm.

Vampire Bat: Well, they were specifically saying that they choose planets.

Vampire Owl: Let us just close the portals to the vampire realm. They will end up destroying our natural world with rivers of blood and graveyards filled with skeletons.

Vampire Bat: You need not worry about it. Uncle Dracula has taken all necessary precautions.

[Gets a mango cake and three cups of Vagamon tea].

What is the movie about? :: Woo-ri (Son Seok-koo) is thirty three years old and single, feeling alone all the time after the woman who was so close to being his girlfriend finds herself a boyfriend. He working at a magazine where he is forced to take over the sex column instead of culture, politics and sports with which he used to be comfortable. Ja-young (Jeon Jong-seo) is a twenty nine year old woman almost turning thirty, and she has had many problems with previous relationships. Woo-ri has his account created on a dating app which Ja-young had created after her breakup with the boyfriend. Ja-young is warned by some of her friends about using the app, but she decides to go on with it, as she finds out that her former boyfriend is getting married, and she would be left single – one of their friends had also found a good partner with the app. She had tried having a relationship in the gym, but that doesn’t work, and neither does her idea of finding someone at the bookshop. Even the random good-looking guy she meets during mountaineering turns out to be the wrong choice, while her debts remain high.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: It is basically the big number of alerts that makes her get back into the dating app, and most of the people there seems to be creepy for her. Woo-ri feels that he will also get something to write in the sex column, and his friend tells him that it will be like having multiple advantages with one single choice with the app. The two meet on the New Year Day and after having a long period of talk over some food, they realize that they do get along quickly enough, only to get their friends curious. She tries to make herself believe that it was a temporary relationship which is not going to last for long, while he is genuinely interested in her. His sex column becomes an instant hit among the readers, as he uses his creative imagination with his experiences, making it like an entertaining story. There is also a lot of appreciation from the higher officials. Despite not getting into a relationship, they do meet each other again and again, and move close to that. Even though they go on with the idea of friends with benefits with nothing serious, there could be more.

The defence of Nothing Serious a.k.a. Romance Without Love :: The movie tries to be the cute romantic love story that does not leave one with much to think about, as the usual romance gets some extra additions here. The visuals of the city are good, and they have chosen some nice places, from restaurants, hotels and cafes to random outdoor places to bring some beauty on the screen. The leading performers of the movie are always there throughout the movie, and for most of the time, both of them are also on the screen, and there is that kind of a dependence on the two characters, which actually works in favour of the film. The fact that these two breathe life and enthusiasm into the main characters is to be appreciated – these are two characters that bring the movie together. Even though there is the usual in here, we also have the divergence also in store – the movie is a combination of the expected and the unexpected, both coming together to create something which is not that far away from life of this century in the big cities. The movie is free-spirited, straight-forward and smart with how it deals with the leading cast, and such collection of qualities are rarely seen in dumb Bollywood romance and others.

The claws of flaw :: The movie does deviate from the cuteness factor at times, as if there is a certain amount of confusion related to which audience the movies is serving. This film should have stayed close to the sweeter side, and could have left some moments for the imagination. All its opportunities are not really sued by the movie, as the first few minutes would make us feel that this movie is up for more. The logic should have been served, but as we know, love story would require less of it, for we know how even the real world tales of love are going and often leading to murders and suicides of the partners before or after the marriage. The movie might not appeal to all kinds of audience, and it seems to be more focused on the newer generation, even though good enough for those generations which are just behind. Even though lasting only one and half hours, there is a certain amount of drag in between, especially with a lot of dialogues coming up. The predictability also has its say, and some melodrama was certainly not needed. The ending also seems forced, even though pretty good to be a finisher to the movie.

The performers of the soul :: Jeon Jong-seo leads the way in this romantic movie, and this is the first time that I am seeing her in a movie. There is a certain amount of cuteness related to her performance here, and there is also some humorous side along with the romantic one. She seems to handle the different emotions of her role quite well. Son Seok-koo contributes in a similar manner, and the chemistry between the two works really well, and seems to raise the movie further. The cuteness factor also relates to their relationship till it gets rather too serious in the last few minutes, only to get back to the same stage by the end. He was part of the supporting cast of the movie, Hit-and-Run Squad among others. Kim Seul-gi and Gong Min-jeung also appear in memorable supporting roles. Kim Young-ok as the grandmother and Kim Jae-hwa as the editor in chief of the magazine also have their moments to be remembered. Along with the same, Kim Kwang-gyu plays the father figure which would also be noted. The supporting cast seems to be quite big, and most of them are going to leave some impact here.

How it finishes :: Nothing Serious a.k.a. Romance Without Love is one of those romantic movies which manages to hold its ground despite not clear with its path, and without bringing anything special. The cuteness factor related to the chemistry between the leading performers seems to drive the movie forward more than anything else. South Korean movies have managed to bring at least some quality in almost every genre that they seem to be part of, and with horror and thriller being the perfect categories, romance and drama also got the power to support. This movie also maintains that quality, and even when there doesn’t seem to be that much of a story, it won’t come down that much in content, and the leading pair elevates it. Jeon Jong-seo who has become part of this genre so well, is often the single reason for the same. It is a much shorter, but interesting idea to spend one and half hours, as there is no shortage of some fun-filled moments. No one can deny the need for some love in the air after the corona virus pandemic.

Qarib Qarib Singlle

What is the movie about? :: Jaya Sashidharan (Parvathy), a Keralite based in the city of Mumbai, spends her time alone, both at home and at office, as she has only a few friends, and has been a widow for about ten years. After so many years of lone life, and not listening to anyone who tells her to marry or get a boyfriend, she finally decides to have a look at an online dating website at the age of thirty five. After being bombarded by so many ridiculous comments by so many men, she finally comes across Yogi (Irrfan Khan) who is interested in poetry and has his own special style, making his case very different from the rest. She is careful about him and understands that both of them are different from each other in so many ways, but decides to go with him to meet three of his ex-girlfriends so that he could understand more about him as a person.

And what is to follow in this particular adventure? :: As part of this long adventure, the two has to travel through Haridwar, Bikaner and Gangtok. But there is one particular fact about Yogi, and it is that he is a carefree person who takes no responsibility on his shoulders – he doesn’t work even after passing engineering, but has written poetry in his mother tongue, and also speaks not much of English. This leads to him missing his flight and getting on the wrong train, and creating a few other situations. Meanwhile, Jaya who has identified herself as Jayashree TK, is fluent in English, and needs everything to go as planned. At their first location itself, they do become good friends, but going past that might be a little difficult, but who knows where some paths can lead? Well, strange things do happen, especially in love and war!

The defence of Qarib Qarib Singlle :: You will find the changes in this movie as a lot refreshing, and a fine thing which is away from the usual Bollywood model. The movie feels real with its incidents and emotions, and never really jumps into that fountain of melodrama which has kept the industry buried alive in a coffin from which there was never supposed to a chance of return, and it is a situation that could be termed as a sadistic thing of terrible beauty if we take a look at things as an outsider. Yes, the fans have always enjoyed the same, as it is what they have always been trying to do, but when we are outside that thought process of becoming addicted to a celebrity who has enough strength to become a parasite on the common man, throwing nonsense and grabbing money, we want the change. Qarib Qarib Singlle is surely that divergence from the regular path, and has fun moments in its realistic world having people who come up with no wonders in love, and are good at heart, not in their muscles, clothes or freaky singing and dancing in a party or pub.

The claws of flaw :: Some people can consider Qarib Qarib Singlle to be a little slow for their liking, but thanks to the smaller length, things get better. People who want less simplicity, and go for that colourful jump mode new generation romance in a pub calling for party, can also skip this one, as the movie calls more for the combined audience of family and youth. You can actually agree to the fact that there could be more comic sequences in this flick, and the journeys to different places could have also been more beautiful with the local scenery captured further along with what all are already there. All those characters other than the two protagonists never really get to do much here, and there is no development of the background as one would expect to be there. The reason for the movie’s journey would also seem a little strange for many. More could have been thus developed with the setting itself too.

Performers of the soul :: There is no stopping Irrfan Khan, and it is a proven fact. It was a few months back that I had come across Hindi Medium, and realized that how much this man had elevated it above the Malayalam version with the same theme, Salt Mango Tree. There is something that he brings on the big screen every time, and we cannot keep ourselves away from it. While Bollywood has been bringing nonsense in the name of keeping the audience entertained with masala, he was there with movies like The Lunchbox, Talvaar and Madaari. Here, he delivers two sides of a character with ease, as the funny side as well as another side with a certain depth in his ideology, arrives safely here. With no fake image of a hero being built, he becomes the everyman character, speaking a little too much, and doing a little more than a usual person, but doing all of them with such perfection which you will find difficult to find with any superstar who depends on his or her fans to sing blind praise.

Further performers of the soul :: While Irrfan Khan’s character maintains a certain amount of mystery as we come across him only after Parvathy’s character decides to go on to meet him, the latter gets a clear personality to work with, right from the beginning. She has worked with it with such skill that one can easily understand that she is one step ahead of almost everyone with that “superstar” title on head, which all try to hold on to. Still, the question remains if Bollywood is worthy enough or at least ready to have a heroine like her, who won’t jump into that masala stuff which provides a heroine with so less to work with that she is reduced to an eye candy. Into a world which is full of “actors or actresses who are related to someone in the industry”, she thrives with her performance rather than anything else, as she did this year with the amazing upgrade to Airlift, known as Take Off, and earlier with Charlie and Ennu Ninte Moideen. Here is one Bollywood debut of quality.

How it finishes :: A long way ahead of the usual romantic flick that Bollywood has been providing us, and also racing ahead of many overrated dumb romance from many languages which got only some ridiculous party songs, pub dance and meaningless infatuation for the audience, Qarib Qarib Singlle makes a point. It shows exactly how a fine romantic feel-good movie can be made, without those unnecessary elements appreciated by a certain group of half-witted audience who should be held responsible for Bollywood having so many low quality hundred crore movies with content not worthy of even being made a short-film – such cases are better suited only for an alien world which has no scope for brain development. If you prefer movies with aversion for clothes being at the same high level as the disinclination for making something sensible, do not bother, and go back to your usual world and continue watching what you call “cool”. Sometimes, the audience becomes the villain to an industry.
