Vampire Owl: I did not know that this one also had Marvel origins.

Vampire Bat: You know that there are so many of them even in Avengers world.

Vampire Owl: Well, this one is surely better than Captain Marvel.

Vampire Bat: We all love the underdogs as they defeat the powerful.

Vampire Owl: Yes, Captain Marvel is too strong a character to be loved.

Vampire Bat: At least they should give her a Kryptonite to balance things.

Vampire Owl: Yes, they could even charge for the same.

Vampire Bat: You think that Kryptonite is available in markets?

Vampire Owl: I have seen a few in the goblin markets.

Vampire Bat: It is a showpiece meant for display, and is not an original one.

[Gets a chicken biryani and three cups of Darjeeling tea].

What is the movie about? :: Sonja (Matilda Lutz) had some terrible times in her homeland of Hyrkania as a child as she was forced to escape her lands after being attacked by barbarians who massacred most people. This leads to her wandering in the woods while searching for her people while keeping close ties to nature. As she chases a group of poachers who were seen killing wild animals, she comes across their camp which she successfully infiltrates without making any noise. But the emperor who controls the whole area outside forest, Dragan (Robert Sheeshan) arrives at the camp as he looks for a way into the forest and its hidden mysteries. Sonja is found by Dragan’s partner Annisia (Wallis Day), a fierce warrior, and both engage in a sword fight, which ends in Sonja getting knocked out and put in chains. As Dragan finds a map with her, he feels that he can find the other half of a book hidden in the forest among refugees that would grant him ancient scientific knowledge, enabling him to hold unlimited power.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: Dragan brings a tied-up Sonja to the open space and tries torturing her to gain information about the forest and what is hidden in there. Sonja, though restrained and helpless, would not give him any useful information, which leads to her being taken to the capital city in a cage. There, she tries to escape, only to have her fully restrained in chains. She is held in a pit meant for warriors who have to fight and win in an arena to gain their freedom. Sonja is set against another warrior Petra (Rhona Mitra) whom she refuses to fight. Annisia asks for her to be killed for disobedience. But Dragan kills Petra as only person is supposed to survive the arena and Sonja has information for him, while the crowd cheered loudly much to Sonja’s dismay. She is locked up in the pit again, but Dragan has planned something bigger. Can she escape the captivity and become free again, while finding her people as she always wanted? Will Annisia get Sonja’s head as she has wished for since their first fight? Will there be peace in the land after a long time?

The defence of Red Sonja :: This movie happens to be a surprise strong entry into a genre which felt like having not future. They have also managed to bring an actress who can act this part so well and perform by blending in – she definitely carried the movie on her soldiers really well with a certain amount of confidence and the ability to handle both action and humour effectively. The movie would remain a fun ride throughout its run as the adventure never cease and so does the entertainment factor. There is nothing like a fantasy adventure with sword fights, saving the world from an evil emperor, magic in the forest, gladiator battles in an arena etc. The visuals that they have managed with the lower budget is very much grand, and seeing the castles, palaces, forests, ruins etc with a touch of magic keeps us interested. Even with the presence of mythical monsters like cyclops and other unnamed creatures, the magical elements are mostly present in a silent manner, keeping it a classic battle with swords while also having a touch of emotions.

Positives and negatives :: The movie could have used a better budget considering the scope and epic level of the whole thing set in a world which is different, huge and created for quite a long-running franchise considering the comics base. The first gladiator battle also ends too soon, even though the grandeur was visible and there to be taken. The emotional ending is beautiful, and there are some fine twists about origin stories, and thankfully, it does not go the Mad Max route without that much of hope. The final moments provide scope for the titular character fighting bigger and more classic battles, and adventures with the possibility of more magic – what better than those stories of saving the world with swords and magic rather than guns and machines? Well, this is also about an underdog coming to the top rather than having an all-powerful hero, even though the final moments of battle were a little bit too predictable. But you know that you are immersed in this world and there is no stopping the same.

The performers of the soul :: Matilda Lutz who plays the titular character leads the way very well, and after we had seen her in horror movies like Rings and A Classic Horror Story, the Italian actress blends into action and adventure very well too. She runs through the action sequences really well and there is a touch of humour around as light-hearted action seems to make an impact too. She seems to have owned the role and is ready for that possible sequel in the form of such action queen that we have all deserved since movies like Underworld and Resident Evil had gone the extra mile with the lady protagonists. Wallis Day whom we know for Infinite has a very strong presence, and scores even with that stone cold look as much as the brutal battles where she excels. Robert Sheehan’s work is something that we will remember for the different portrayal of an emperor. Rhona Mitra’s lady warrior stays strong enough when she is there, but becomes expendable very soon. Michael Bisping and Martyn Ford have strong presences physically around there too.

How it finishes :: As the movie is on Lionsgate Play app, the best option to watch it might be to take a good unlimited Airtel offer and watch it among the collection of OTTs which come with the offer. The Sword and Sorcery genre does have a better stronghold here at a time when fantasy itself was losing steam. This is also pure nostalgia for most of us, also reminding one of Conan the Barbarian in its original mode. There is that imagery of fighting against evil empires as there have always been, and also the proven idea that power corrupts more than anything else. With Matilda Lutz as the next action star, and having a whole world to build a story, let us see how well they can try to make a sequel, for it is a necessity to keep the character alive. Both Marvel and DC seem to have a weak second level of characters for Avengers and Justice with a new age and the only exception is Thunderbolts that remain interesting; it calls for characters like this one.

Vampire Owl: We are all free vampires in a world of slavery.

Vampire Bat: This not really that much of a world of chains.

Vampire Owl: You are not understanding the power of our chains.

Vampire Bat: There are no chains in this realm which can hold a vampire.

Vampire Owl: I am not talking about the physical chains.

Vampire Bat: You mean to say that there is a telepath in the realm?

Vampire Owl: Yes, and she is stronger than any vampire mind reader.

Vampire Bat: You are talking about the legend of the witch-vampire.

Vampire Owl: It is actually the vampire-witch. She is mostly the witch.

Vampire Bat: Just because she knows how travel on a broom-stick, she is now a witch?

[Gets a paneer puffs and three glasses of blackcurrant shake].

What is the movie about? :: We are introduced to Free City where people who are wearing sunglasses are heroes, and run the city. They can do almost anything in the city, never really obeying the rules which are applicable to others. Among the many normal people in the city is Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who seems to live a usual kind of life, as he works as a bank teller, and considers his life as a part of a paradise where he lived from the time he can remember. His best friend is the bank’s securiy gurad, Buddy (Lil Rel Howery), who is not really bothered about the bank getting robbed frequently. Everyone out there seems to be very happy, and Guy feels that he has everything that he needs, except for a lover. He attempts to fall in love without success, and feels that he hasn’t really found the right person yet. Soon, he finds a mysterious girl wearing sunglasses, and as he goes after her, is run over by a train. It is soon revealed that the world they are living in is actually a game – a massively multiplayer online role-playing video game, which has Guy as a non-player character.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: The mysterious girl is Millie (Jodie Comer) in the avatar Molotov Girl, a player looking for source code to her original game, Life Itself which she wrote with Keys (Joe Keery). It was stolen by Antwan (Taika Waititi), the Soonami CEO who stole it and turned it into something else. Keys wants to help, but prefers to work with Antwan instead, and continue to have a job. At the same time, Guy has deviated from the programme after listening to that unintentional song from Millie. He starts off by asking the wrong coffee instead of the one programmed for the NPC. He also starts talking differently to many people, which leads to changes in the programming of other NPCs too. Soon, he decides to steal the sunglasses, as the girl was also wearing them. He gets one from a robber, and starts seeing things from the perspective of the players from the world outside. It makes him think deviate even further from his original programming.

And what more is here in a world of chaos? :: The programmers think that a hacker from real life has taken over the NPC, and is playing the role differently, feeling that it is indeed a small glitch which will be resolved soon enough. As Millie comes against him, she also feels that he is a player and asks him to level up, so that he could be of more worth, an advice he takes into himself seriously. Unlike the others, he decides to level up by doing good things only, with minimum use of weapons. He begins to try to be like the heroes that he had witnessed on the streets, but with only the good side by helping people in need and fighting some evil. Soon, he becomes a top level player, and is also an internet sensation in the real world. He also saves Millie when she is on a mission to collect the evidence, and she falls in love with him feeling that he is actually a real person who is playing the game. Soon enough, they will understand the same, and so will Antwan. Now, the equations will be complicated. Can the makers find their code, and where does that leave Guy?

The defence of Free Guy :: The movie’s concept is really good, and is a pretty good addition to what we have seen before in different films before. Among the other more famous films, the one which I remember the most is The Thirteenth Floor, even though the world peculiarities also reminds us of the one most famous film, The Matrix. The main character also reminds us of the protagonist of The Lego Movie and the rest of the people like Nerve. We are reminded of the games like Grand Theft Auto, Mafia and The Godfather too. These reminders serve to provide some nostalgia too. The mixture made out of the combination of different interesting things continue to be engaging, and also has a certain amount of humour associated with it. At the same time, there is a strong emotional side which never brings the overdose. The world in the movie is indeed interesting, and there are some fine visuals which support this new universe. It is indeed a stylish and beautiful environment that we have here, and the connection with the original world is well-established.

Positives and negatives :: One might feel that the idea is not new, but the presentation does have some innovation about it, and it never really gets that dark or serious about the happenings around here. Due to the same reason, there can be some predictability here, which they have managed to hide at some points effectively. Ryan Reynolds is here with a fine performance, and a role which is very much more worth appreciation than Deadpool – here he plays one of the most lovable protagonists around, and he seems to do that with ease. As expected, he also excels in the action sequences. Jodie Comer excels in two worlds, and she strikes well with action sequences within the new world and also outside the game. There are some spectacular action scenes with the two around, and would be a case of grandeur on the big screen. Joe Keery also has a nice role to play which he manages well. Lil Rel Howery adds further to the comic side well. Taika Waititi also makes a good villain, the big rich one with only money in his mind.

How it finishes :: Free Guy is that kind of a movie which needs more attention in this part of the world, as it is appropriate for almost every kind of audience. The movie also deals with the idea of existence – maybe we are all in a video game too, and will never know. Maybe we are all programmed to, as there is something special about all of us – then, maybe life has no meaning; all these could be reminded by this one movie. What if we are not programmed to know the truth about our existence? Even in between all these people go for war, and most humans just hate each other. Maybe it would have been all better if this was a video game, for there is so much of hate, and the futility of one’s actions is disheartening. Those who work harder than others and the ones who are the most honest are the ones who suffer the most. You live a life with life-long learning and it might be some moron who gets the job for which you are best qualified – then there are the reservations which hands them the jobs. Maybe, our lives are also programmed – we might be in a video game.

Wonder Woman

Vampire Owl: I see that humans have come up with another one with superpowers. They are never short of heroes who don’t exist.

Vampire Bat: The superheroes have also grown up with their civilizations along with the myths.

Vampire Owl: I do wonder how they manage to remember the names of this many superheroes. Maybe they have a list.

Vampire Bat: Well, there are the very famous ones, and then there are those which come in the next level of popularity. They remember only those whom they want to.

Vampire Owl: I had once known only Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and He-Man.

Vampire Bat: And there was also The Phantom and Mandrake, plus we knew some X-Men beginning with the Wolverine.

Vampire Owl: The rest certainly came late except for those who had regular access to DC and Marvel Comics.

Vampire Bat: And we are having a lot extra of the same now; remember there was even Doctor Strange who seemed like Mandrake to us.

Vampire Owl: DC and Marvel should be in a battle for more.

Vampire Bat: I am actually tired counting these superheroes, but there are some who needs more attention due to the variety.

[Gets the tickets with masala tea and cheese popcorn].

What is the movie about? :: Diana Prince a.k.a. the Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) receives an old photograph from Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman (Ben Affleck) after the events in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which seemingly lead to the death of Superman (Henry Cavill) in the hands of the monster known as Doomsday. This image open a flashback to when Diana was a child and was training with the Amazons in the island of Themyscira, a place hidden from the outside world. Looked after carefully by her mother Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and her aunt Antiope (Robin Wright), she has a fascination to fighting, which they reluctantly agrees to have her go through. With a fear of war always in their heads, the Amazons are always ready for battle, with their combat training, in which Diana excels. But they know, and keep telling her that there is more to her than what meets the eye, and they understand that she is not really one of them by birth.

So, what happens next? :: Diana rescues a pilot named Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) after his plane manages to get through the fog and enter the coast of Themyscira. The Amazons kill the German soldiers chasing him with their arrows, but Antiope dies protecting Diana. It is revealed that Steve has been working as a spy for the Allies during World War I and has stolen valuable information from a weapons facility in the Ottoman Empire. With the help of the Turks, the German General Erich Ludendorff (Danny Huston) is having his sadistic scientist Doctor Maru a.k.a. Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya) produce a new kind of gas which could deviate the war in their direction. Learning that millions could die if the German general has his way, Diana decides to leave the island with Steve and her weapons. She intends to find the God of War, Ares, and stop this war to end all wars. Despite their doubts, the Amazons decide not to stop her.

And, what is to follow next in the adventure? :: Their arrival at the city of London has Diana in doubts, but she goes along with his plans hoping to find the God of War and finish him off to save humanity. Despite providing the officials with his information, Steve is told to hold off any act against the Germans as an armstice is being discussed. But knowing that General Erich Ludendorff will not hold off his plan to release the gas, Steve decides to the frontlines, arranging a small team including a spy and language expert, Sameer (Said Taghmaoui), expert sniper Charlie (Ewen Bremner), and a smuggler Chief (Eugene Brave Rock) who helps them to get to the front. With no hope of getting through the lines, Diana decides that she has to take this to the next level. But how far can she go in search of the God of War, and how far will it lead her team of five through the First World War?

The defence of Wonder Woman :: There are many names which have come in favour of being the Wonder Woman, but Gal Gadot surely steals the show this one. Known the most for her work in the Fast and Furious series, that is surely going to change now, if it hadn’t with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. If you don’t watch this movie or ban it because she is in there, it is your loss – we have heard about people boycotting movies over the beliefs of one person, as they cruelly did with Ender’s Game, and also the nationality or other work is no reflection of the movie that he or she acts in – the irritating fans could be a better reason. She is brilliant in this one, with so many shades of a superhero being present here. Chris Pine also brings a fine, controlled performance here, even though he will always be remembered for Star Trek and its sequels more than any other. There is also that wonderful world in 3D, especially that of the Amazons, and we also have the explosions with all the shooting and all the rest that goes on in a superhero movie.

Positives and negatives :: The movie has some of the most memorable battle scenes, first one with the Amazon warriors battling the Germans on the beach and the second one with Wonder Woman making her way through the No Man’s Land. The final battle is not that much, with too much darkness on the screen at times, and at other times having too many explosions – the idea of the God of War could have also been left as it was expected to be, as we know humans and the evil that they bring to their world. I wouldn’t depend that much on the villains either, and even that twist feels rather unwanted – humans could have been left their right to be the villains in their own tale. The first half is also superior to the second, with the nice humour and the Amazon world becoming the highlights. There is also some balance here, without the overdose of heroism, except for what comes in the end. It is still a case of surprise seeing not many multiplexes showing this movie, and not many people wishing to watch it even on a holiday – there were like ten to fifteen people when I watched the same.

How it finishes :: Wonder Woman makes sure that the battle between Marvel and DC is on, and with Justice League coming up, we are sure to have them bringing the battle to Avengers. With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice not being an assurance, and Suicide squad despite being an excellent one not working for those who decided not to embrace its poetic beauty on the screen, DC was to be left with those Dark Knight movies and up-to an extent, Man of Steel. But that won’t be the case from now on, and Wonder Woman begins that programme of resurrection. Well, with the shield and their ideas about the world, Wonder Woman can be DC’s own Captain America, but what one has to remember is that Avengers did it first, and Justice League is only following – with Marvel having the advantage, the question remains if DC can come up as strong as its competitor, without Christopher Nolan? The answer is to come late, but until then, we can enjoy Wonder Woman.
