Vampire Bat: Well, we live in a vampire welfare society. There is no need of too much cash.

[Gets a chicken pizza and three cups of Bagdogra tea].

What is the movie about? :: Oommen (Sharaf U Dheen) is an engineer who quit his job in IT industry at Bangalore to start his own business in the form of a grand tea shop known as Chai Nation Private Limited, which he established close to an It park. But the venture is not successful, and his plans to expand the business gets nowhere. His father Kuruvila (Johny Antony) is only interested in making profit by investing in cryptocurrency, and he miserably fails in doing the same like he had earlier did with share market. Thambi (George Kora), Oommen’s brother is running a football club for children known as Thambi FC, based out of Kadavanthra. But the team has always been losing matches, especially to their newfound nemesis Bolgatty FC. Shoshamma (Asha Madathil Sreekanth) is not happy about her jobless husband Kuruvilla or the two sons who are also of no use. During one of the games, he gets to meet Mariyam (Meenakshi Raveendran), who is very much interested in football, and has returned to her sister Shahana (Anju Abraham) and brother-in-law Feroz (Abraham Joseph) who forms a typical orthodox family. She had only recently divorced her husband at Qatar, which has led to her living a lonely life.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: The struggles of Oommen, Thambi and Kuruvilla comes together with the failed attempts of Shoshamma to get her book published while going through her life as a librarian. Her psychological thriller keeps getting rejected by different publishers. Oomen is in love with Sharmin (Poonam Gurung) from Tibet who used to work with him, while Thambi and Mariyam gets closer to each other as much as they go keep the passion for football. Oomen’s attempts to impress a potential sponsor Althaf (Althaf Salim) fails miserably, while Thambi F C losses its players after a fight which breaks out after a match. Both Thambi F C and Chai Nation continues to be in trouble as the latter forms the main sponsor for the team. Kuruvilla is forced to get out of home as he losses more of the money earned by Shoshamma. Oomen’s relationship with Sharmin also gets into trouble. The family struggles to keep things going, as life gets more and more difficult for them to remain normal. Can they finally go past the struggles and get what each of them wishes to achieve in their lives?

The defence of Tholvi F C :: We have always looked for some fine family movies which we can relate to, and finish the movie with some happiness that can be kept with us for long. The message about gaining success in life is asserted strongly again and again. We are never short of the need to have some inspirational movies as long as they do not overdo their ideas with impossible or useless ideas which lead us to trouble. This movie knows where it stands in relation to that, and even though the investment and innovation mode might feel extra, the overall thing remains interesting and connectible to all of us. There are only a few feel-good movies with family and children that have managed to make a good impression on me, and this is surely one of them. Unlike some other overrated families in Malayalam movies, this is surely one family that we can love better than other. The comic side is very good, and they also feel realistic and close to our lives, sometimes reminding us of the pathetic state of affairs all around us, serving as satire too. Some of the dialogues are nicely written to stay in our minds and situations are created in the same way too. The significance of tea is also asserted so well, and a dream come true for all tea lovers to see the drink taking centre stage at times.

The claws of flaw :: There are moments when Tholvi F C tries to force some feel-good factor when the chance was not really there. The elements of football could have been taken in a better way. Some parts of the movie seem to be added just for the sake of having them there, even though no movie needs to focus on giving equality and liberty ideas all the time. There are moments when quick solution achieved despite going deeper, as humour takes over fast enough to overtake the tension. The problems of motherly figure also get a little too less attention here, as the character was the one who could have had much more to display here. The scattering of the elements of the movie is surely uneven, as it struggles to combine them at times. Sometimes, the movie does try too hard all of a sudden, but then we also realize that it is moving towards that aim of being full feel-good, to which tireless striving and the requirement not to yield is to be asserted, and we also let it go and move along. Still, a better title would have inspired more people to watch this one for sure.

The performers of the soul :: The main role of the movie is handled well by Sharaf U Dheen, who had already done a similar job well with Madhura Manohara Moham, providing the image of the family man who is not that successful in life. In this case, the bigger struggle belongs to him rather than the others around him, even though the problems belong to all of them. Johny Antony plays the father figure with his own long-lasting troubles well, as his transformation to the hardworking man is well-portrayed and combination scenes with Asha Madathil Sreekanth work really well. George Kora, the director plays the other character that undergoes transformation from the irresponsible to the better man with the touch of humour that keeps the movie getting better as it progresses. What strikes us more is Meenakshi Raveendran in a serious role which never ceases to be impressive. From Naayika Nayikan days and the later Udan Panam days with Dain Davis, we knew that she was a talent to be remembered, and she re-iterates the same even though she has not been provided which that many roles in the industry. The emotional side is as much safe with her as the humour. Althaf Salim and Anuraj O B nicely adds to the overall humour with some fine funny moments, and the child actors are really good here.

How it finishes :: Tholvi F C never really moves away from its feel-good factor, and the possibilities that it can achieve with simple family humour. This is one movie which is powered by its female lead more than any other even though it is not that much marketed in the same way, as Meenakshi Raveendran keeps scoring so well with multiple sides of life. There is no doubt about the fact that the movie could have been better with the progression of a tale which intends to be inspiring, but the purpose is nicely served in the end. For a new year, we should be looking for movies which would motivate us to do better, and this movie in Amazon Prime Video now, does the same with effectiveness. This drama about dysfunctional families never gets out of the light mood, even though some dark shades and a feeling of real danger comes in the end. We have some beginning to 2024 through the OTT platform, and we can only hope that the same can be there in the theatres too, as we wish another fine year for Malayalam movie industry which brings more collections and even more viewers than last year with bigger getting ready for release.

Vampire Owl: We should use the pests to our advantage.

Vampire Bat: You can’t control these pests at all. Only the witches can do it.

Vampire Owl: Do you think that they might use the pests against us?

Vampire Bat: They are good with such small creatures.

Vampire Owl: Well, I would expect an attack at any moment.

Vampire Bat: You should have faith in at least some witches. We are not so different from each other.

[Gets a masala dosa and three cups of cardamom tea].

What is the movie about? :: Radhika Balan (Rajisha Vijayan) lives with her father, Retired Advocate Balan (Sreenivasan) while working as a cyber-security expert at her own start-up company with her partner Vijay (Rahul Riji Nair). She is good friends with CI Charles (Vijay Babu), whom she helps as part of an investigation. Radhika is adamant that one’s privacy should always be respected and that their firm should only help people who have compromised their privacy due to hacking or carlessness. It is then that she accidentally calls a wrong number and Kili Biju (Mahesh Nair) who is on the other side continues to bother her on phone. He gets her name through True Caller App and finds more information about her by searching her name on Facebook. She is frustrated and decides to complain to the police, and things go out of control at the police station. Biju’s friend Thurumbu Aji (Renjit Shekar Nair) is a man who has been on the criminal records for a long time, and was also involved in a murder case – he decides to lead his friends (Anand Manmadhan and Arjun Ranjan) in an attempt to make Radhika’s life a living hell, and doesn’t leave her father out of it either.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: They follow her at her home and office, and also goes on to destroy the reputation of her father – it feels like wherever she goes, they are present at the location. When they decide that they are finally done with Radhika and her father, she decides that this is not the end. She decides to get into their privacy by hacking their mobile phones, so that they won’t think about doing this to anybody else again. Vijay is worried about her actions, and the same is the case of her father, but she is not ready to go back on it. She manages to get into the phone of Biju, and even though it is only revenge that was looking for, she comes across the information that could mean more than that. It turns out that even though they live as scrap-dealers, there is more to them than what meets the eye. They are involved in gold smuggling and other illegal activities, and they work as carriers for different people in different areas. Radhika might be dealing with a little bit too much, and it will be of the best interest for everyone if she backs down, but will she? What will Aji and his group do when they find out that she is spying on their crimes?

The defence of Keedam :: We can see that Keedam chooses a realistic character who doesn’t create any magic within a thriller unlike what is often expected. The female protagonist here does what she has always done the best, and she does the same in style. The messages about cyber security is more or less of a reminder of the world that we are living in, and leaves the idea that we need to be more careful when we are using any electronic device. There are some defining moments here which makes things more interesting. The final moments are indeed thrilling, even though the much needed final closure was not there to be taken. The divergence that the movie possesses is to be appreciated, and unlike some other industries, Malayalam seems to have all those movies, with the makers moving from one category to the other with relative ease, and even coming up classic stuff in between. The father-daughter relationship is shown well, reminding one of the same in Helen and Uyare with Lal-Anna and Siddique-Parvathy, even though the father figure here is more worried and weakened, and still doesn’t trouble her with his lectures much.

The claws of flaw :: Keedam doesn’t use its resources to the best advantage – the premise was so good, and there were so many paths which it could have travelled; there is no limitation in the cyber world. Cyber security is no longer the topic of a selected few, and the rise of Jio and the spread of COVID-19 did change the situation for internet and its unlimited resources which came upon unsuspecting people all of a sudden – most of them were easy prey to cyber problems as they were not ready, and the youth just fell into the mobile gaming trap. The film could have dealt with such problems more effectively like Operation Java. Often, there is the feeling that something is missing in between. As it follows this particular pattern, there is the unconvincing feeling coming up at times. The ending could have also been better, and it didn’t need the forced extra scene there. The movie had also started with Hindi lines with the beginning credits, and that provides the feeling that someone speaking Hindi was involved in crimes or that this happens outside Kerala and Tamil Nadu, a rather strange to do, whatever be the reason.

The performers of the soul :: Rajisha Vijayan who could be a part of the much acclaimed Jai Bhim after the sports drama Kho Kho, once again does an excellent job in another role of interest. There are not many roles which she can’t do in the industry, as she rises above the other actresses with movies having her as main protagonist. She gets into this character which is very much different from her much appreciated roles in June and Finals, and always looks comfortable with the same. Rahul Riji Nair who directs another film with the same lady lead has things in control as the actor too. Sreenivasan is present in the father role, and has done the character of a concerned father well. Vijay Babu plays a sensible police officer with all the qualities which are needed with it. Manikandan Pattambi of Marimayam fame manages the negative character well, and it is his dialogue which seems to give the title to this movie. The rest of the antagonists of the group have managed their roles well, and in a realistic manner, led by Renjit Shekar Nair. For this movie, the choice of antagonists did work in its favour, even though in the end, there should have been more in store for them.
How it finishes :: Keedam is a movie which could have achieved so much more – there was so much potential considering the topic which it was dealing with. But with its idea and the protagonist to be noted, there is another step in the right direction, and it remains very much interesting at the same time too. It is another reminder of Malayalam movie industry’s courage to venture into unfamiliar territories, as it had already done with the superhero stuff in Minnal Murali stuff, while also having one of the most human films in the form of Madhuram releasing in different OTT platforms within the gap of a few days. Rajisha Vijayan might be the best actress we have in Malayalam film industry now, and we know that people don’t get Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress on debut movies just like that as she did in Anuraga Karikkin Vellam. She has dealt with sadness, depression, anger, fear, love and friendship with so much effectiveness in her movies. The movie could have had more for her, but as it seems now, is an entertaining thriller which also has a realistic side in parts.

Kho Kho

What is the movie about? :: Maria Francis (Rajisha Vijayan) is appointed as a PT teacher in a girls’ school, in the remote area of a village which is surrounded by backwaters. She is forced to take up the job because her husband Ben (Venkitesh VP) was facing failure in business, and was in requirement of the money. Maria used to be a sprinter, and was very close to representing India at an international level when something terrible happened in her life. At the new school, the two people who is in support of her activities are the peon Shivaprasad (Renjit Shekar Nair) and the accountant Vinod (Rahul Riji Nair), the latter being doubtful about the requirement for a PT teacher in the school, yet being interested in Maria. After some days of doing almost nothing in the school which has historically given no importance to arts and sports, she decides to create a kho-kho team for the first time in school history, a move much appreciated by the headmaster.

So, what happens with the events to follow? :: With a confused but hardworking team led by the stubborn Anju (Mamitha Baiju) who has her own mood swings and not missing her chance to pick up a fight, Maria hopes to make history through her students, and achieve greatness which she couldn’t earlier due to circumstances. The parents of the students are against the students choosing sports instead of using that time for studies, and do not appreciate the fact that the girls are going somewhere far away to compete. But as they qualify for the district level competitions, they do manage to gain a certain amount of support. The girls’ problem related to balancing studies and sports, their problem with wearing shorts within a conservative world and Anju’s attraction towards Shivaprasad might be the least of the problems with Maria will have to face here. Can she and Anju lead the team towards seemingly impossible victories and an even more elusive final triumph?

The defence of Kho-Kho :: Depending more on the emotions than anything else, Kho-Kho also has the usual moments of thrill with the games. It is the common motivational story of the underdogs who had no chance, but with hardwork and inspired performance, comes out victorious against all odds. The characters and the setting become interesting in this case, as this goes through life of common people for most of the time. We also have some nice visuals to go with the same. There are many exciting scenes here to remember too. The struggles of the characters involved here are shown well, especially the two main characters played by Rajisha and Mamitha. The feeling which was provided by Finals is somewhat repeated in this movie, and if you had like that movie, this will be on your favourite sports drama list too. The songs are pretty good, and they go on well with the visuals as well as the mood, and so does the background music. Unlike Chak De! India and Dangal, this is the real woman-centric film with empowerment, and without those unnecessary superstar exaggerations, and that feels true to life in many ways.

The claws of flaw :: Kho-Kho is certainly not that big as Finals, the other film with the same actress in the lead. The background story which keeps on moving silently is not that strong when we look at it. The premise feels similar to other movies, and we can predict a lot of things which are going to happen here. A number of training scenes and events are more repetitive rather than trying to do something different or unpredictable. To add to it, some dialogues actually look more artificial, right out of paper, rather than coming with the emotional weight. Venkitesh is also very much underused in another movie after The Priest limited him, and Thattumpurath Achuthan‘s song presence had made us feel that he would be a regular full presence. More of the girls in the cast should have got more attention though, at least half of them. The release of the movie on Asianet was delayed by a week, and it was Drishyam 2 which had its television release then, a disappointing decision from the channel which might have kept some people away.

The performers of the soul :: We have seen Rajisha Vijayan only in a few movies, and among them, we have seen such great skill. We have seen her in the grand performances from Anuraga Karikkin Vellam which brought her the Kerala State Award for Best Actress, through the nostalgia-inducing coming-of-age story of June, to the earlier sports drama of high acclaim, Finals. It is to be noted that in both sports drama, Rajisha plays a character with a tragedy to go with both life and career. With her role beginning as the trainer, the tragic background was established much earlier here. Rajisha once again has the whole thing in control here, and from the beginning to the end, it is a determined as well as emotional performance. Well, Finals was the best movie of the season when it released, but many people missed the work on the big screen, and the same is the case here too due to COVID-19, and it seems that the early television premieres are changing some of the situation here, with everyone getting the needed access not too late.

Further performers of the soul :: Mamitha Baiju who was also seen in Operation Java plays the captain of the team, and plays her role in a very much believable manner, with all the emotions and determination required for the role. She will surely be a talent to look out for, with more of similar roles. There is the rage and a flurry of emotions that she comes up with, which suits very well for her character with a troubled past. Unlike the character she played in the Balu Varghese starrer, the energy here is intense. Venkitesh VP as the protagonist’s husband has only a limited role, and we are still hoping to see him in bigger roles, like we have wanted all those actors and actresses in the Naayika Naayakan reality show to come out with their performances on the big screen. Renjit Shekar Nair and the director himself – Rahul Riji Nair comes up with good supporting performances. Vettukili Prakash’s role might have felt unnecessary. The cast of girls in the team is also nicely done, and at least quarter of them stay with us by the end, even though not more than one or two gets extra attention.

How it finishes :: Kho-Kho is another sports drama which you don’t need to miss, and it is also a film which goes through the base level of the game, without overdoing the same. Just like Finals, it is nice to see another sport with lesser fans getting all the attention, and not the highly fan favourite Indian sport of cricket or football which comes second. Cricket never really required movies as support, but some sports can have films made on them to bring out interest back to them, and this is the same case happening here. The movie is a reminder of a sport which is often left unnoticed among the bigger names. Kho-Kho is a film that can have even a sequel with this content, and there are times when it also reminds us of Godha, which brought back memories of wrestling as a sport. These are indeed the films which needs our support, and not those overrated stuff which has wandered around with a lot of hype and no substance. Kho-Kho needs to come back to television or release on Amazon Prime at some point to expand its horizons.
