Vampire Owl: I remember that we had a thought about watching this one in the theatre.

Vampire Bat: Yes, but it is now on Sony LIV, and so we get to it.

Vampire Owl: I feel that Sony LIV has some of the most unexpected releases.

Vampire Bat: Some classic movies are surely around there.

Vampire Owl: Recharging with that Airtel unlimited offer did have that advantage.

Vampire Bat: We had lost the urge to watch movies in theatres anyway.

Vampire Owl: Yes, one of the things which corona virus lockdown had changed.

Vampire Bat: Yet the world remains too much the same.

Vampire Owl: Well, world changes, but how many times can a vampire change?

Vampire Bat: A vampire is not immune to uncertainties of life.

[Gets a poori masala and three cups of Kandy tea].

What is the movie about? :: SI Jayakrishnan (Vinayakan) is assigned with what seemed to be a usual case of local unrest following the elopement of a young woman that was slowly moving towards a communal problem due to the woman being a Hindu and the man being a Muslim. To add to this, the man had denied any involvement in the woman going missing, making the woman’s family even more angry and frustrated. But there is no proof that the two even talked to each other except for someone who looked like him being seen around. Soon, they find out that the woman had not eloped with anyone they knew. As he digs deeper and deeper, Jayakrishnan begins noticing inconsistencies and understands that there is something that lies deep beneath. He understands a long-running pattern of missing women across the rural areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, divorced, widowed or unmarried for a very long time, each last seen with only one unidentified man. There seems to be some pattern about this.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: There is also an alternating pattern that after a murder occurs in Kerala, the next one takes place in Tamil Nadu, as missing women from Kerala seems to travel to Tamil Nadu, and vice versa. The investigation reveals that each victim’s phone is used to call and communicate the next target, forming an unbroken chain. To help the investigation further, they seek the help of a police officer in the border and with good knowledge of both state investigations, Stanley Das (Mammootty). The number of victims and possible victims only keep increasing, to Deepa (Shruti Ramachandran), Divya (Rajisha Vijayan), Babitha (Malavika Menon), Nandhini (Malavika Nair), Abhijitha (Dhanya Ananya), Shiny (Gayatri Arun), Anagha (Vaishnavi Sasikumar) Despite trying different methods to get the killer, the team keeps failing and reaching a dead end. They begin to suspect that a policeman might be involved and the person could be a psychopath with a perfect planning and identity. Can they find the person before times runs out?

The defence of Kalamkaval :: This is one movie that dares to go through divergent patterns. It does not take the usual path, but the narrative is kept really interesting, even without the situations not really following the parallel path. The tension and the mood are what keeps the movie going, that too with minimum gore and the violence is implied, never taking over the screen despite all the dark mood that has spread through the flick. The tension goes further with the cat and mouse game that prevails throughout its run. The visuals are really good and the dark tone does not keep the visual beauty down. There are not many dramatic sequences in the movie, as we look further, and there is no attempt to take this to the masses except for those few shots of the main character. There is nothing heroic about the investigation here, which makes it closer to reality, and we see that this one progresses through understanding and observation. The silence is nicely used, and even the final action stays very realistic.

The claws of flaw :: The movie should have kept the suspense of the psychopath at least for some time instead of revealing during such an early moment. There was the requirement for some shock element, and even that surprise in the beginning is delivered cold. This where the slow pace comes in, and we see the same pattern being repeated without anything new being added. The viewer keeps wondering if the overall length of the movie could have been less, thus making the movie more interesting with lesser victims shown – there is not much variety in the method, so seeing the same thing again and again was to be rather dull. The need for innovation was surely there to avoid repetitions here and there. There were moments where the movie really needed to pick up the pace too. The struggle to bring anything other than what has been repeated from the beginning can be seen, with the progress being so slow. One would keep wondering if something extra was there to be taken from behind.

The performers of the soul :: Mammootty leads the way in this film as an antagonist that we do not see from his side. The negative shade is more intense than ever, and remains bold and strong with that restrained evil which is not easy to portray. The psychological depth of the character is very well reflected in him, and could bring more appreciation with its presence in the OTT platform, and surely can have a sequel, or even a prequel. Vinayakan does his police role so well and in a realistic manner. This is one police character that gains no exaggeration, and we are with him throughout the investigation. This is one interesting character that goes so smooth that we love his way of doing things. The female characters only a get a few moments each, as there are so many of them, but it is Rajisha Vijayan who gets to do more and makes the short impact. In the end, it is Gayatri Arun who has more moments. Seema Sindhu Krishnan also has a throughout presence. Gibin Gopinath scores in the supporting moment, while the roles of Azees Nedumangad, Shyamaprasad and Kunchan are not extended despite having some scope around.

How it finishes :: Kalamkaval makes a quality journey with a fine narrative in its core. There is the feeling that more suspense could have been added, but this mode of journey in itself proves to be effective. The box-office collections of the movie is a reflection of the quality of the movie rather than anything else. Being a quietly disturbing, performance-driven investigative crime thriller depending on atmosphere and psychology will deprive the mass audience of what they have always wanted, but in that way, this one raises itself in overall quality. It had worked well through some of those carefully constructed scenes, and uses silence, restraint and visually beautiful storytelling to explore the darker corners of human mind, and makes us remember a few killers of John Luther, Forensic and Anjaam Paathira. You can forgive its slow pace and repetitions and go through the cinematic experience instead. It reminds us that even in the calm, there can be fear and terror, and we are reminded about how easy it is to exist side-by-side with terror.

Vampire Bat: Anand Sreebala seems to have provided a similar feeling.

Vampire Owl: And that Anveshippin Kandethum feeling of last year.

Vampire Bat: And that of Ozler with the same actress.

Vampire Owl: We wonder how many mysteries are yet to be solved.

Vampire Bat: We have missed too many thrillers in between.

Vampire Owl: We now have the best thrillers in Malayalam.

Vampire Bat: We continue to believe in such smooth investigations.

Vampire Owl: And we need more serial killers.

Vampire Bat: The best thrillers surely can use a few.

Vampire Owl: We know that the best thrillers are coming.

Vampire Bat: Well, we have listed a few.

Vampire Owl: A little more darkness could have been fine.

Vampire Bat: Darker the movie, better its world.

Vampire Owl: This movie seems to be not that dark.

Vampire Bat: There is some nostalgia though.

Vampire Owl: The journey to the past never gets old.

Vampire Bat: Especially when it is related to movies.

Vampire Owl: We have seen Malayalam films using the same in the best way.

Vampire Bat: I would let the nostalgia run wild in fear.

Vampire Owl: Horror and a memorable past combine well.

Vampire Bat: Like a shake, biryani and tea.

[Gets a box with cheese popcorn and three cups of ginger tea and moves into theatre].

Vampire Owl: This was such a well-made journey.

Vampire Bat: The combination of nostalgia and mystery of the past and the investigation with its thrills in the present.

Vampire Owl: It provides us a past which is memorable.

Vampire Bat: Yes, the golden age of Malayalam cinema.

Vampire Owl: The 1980s and 1990s. Fifteen years of 1985 to 1999, right?

Vampire Bat: The age of Nadodikkaattu, Utharam and others on one side.

Vampire Owl: The age of Spadikam, Summer in Bethlehem and others on the other. The connections to Mutharamkunnu P O and Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam are nicely created.

Vampire Bat: The movie then refers to Kathodu Kathoram, another one we remember.

Vampire Owl: Who would not remember the song “Devadoothar paadi”?

Vampire Bat: And we were reminded of the same in Nna Thaan Case Kodu, shown here too.

Vampire Owl: This also reminds me of Cold Case.

Vampire Bat: The discovery of a skull, yes – but not as old as this one.

Vampire Owl: The mystery of the skull still impresses, doesn’t it?

Vampire Bat: Well, we just have the full skeleton this time.

Vampire Owl: A disgraced police officer investigating the case, and that’s something which keeps us interested in the same.

Vampire Bat: Discovery of the skull, finding its origin, but nobody knowing the person except for the face and name, then the difficulty to prove who died even when there is the idea that it is known that who really committed the murder.

Vampire Owl: It is once against Asif Ali in the role of a police officer that steals the show – we remember that Thalavan was so good.

Vampire Bat: Anaswara Rajan and nostalgia has become a fine combination too, and it is indeed great to see.

Vampire Owl: The other leading actress, Bhama Arun has done a fine job in between too. It is a role similar to what the leading actress of Anand Sreebala was doing.

Vampire Bat: The other two main actresses, Zarin Shihab and Megha Thomas have blended into their respective roles so well as we look at them.

Vampire Owl: Siddique, Saikumar and Indrans once against impresses in the serious roles which seem to suit them better than ever these days.

Vampire Bat: This one movie that provides the satisfaction not just as a thriller, but also as a near complete film.

Vampire Owl: Nishanth Sagar is one actor whom we need to see more and suits the cop role like never before.

Vampire Bat: Manoj K Jayan plays too big a villain and Saleema becomes the pair in has been through with the villainy for too long. It was rather too direct though.

Vampire Owl: In the end, we have another murder mystery that we love. This is another one of those movies that keeps us in a world of investigation that thrills.

[Disappears into the darkness of the day during twilight and awaits the darkest bloody night of that particular week].

Bheemante Vazhi

Vampire Owl: So, they are going to talk about the path taken by Bheeman.

Vampire Bat: It is like the path which is constructed by Bheeman.

Vampire Owl: Are we talking about Chhota Bheem or Jai Bhim here?

Vampire Bat: No, this has absolutely no relationship with them.

Vampire Owl: It is indeed strange, because then we will have go to mythology.

Vampire Bat: This person has a real name, and it is not Bheeman.

Vampire Owl: So, he is pretending to be Bheeman.

Vampire Bat: I would suggest that you focus on watching the film instead of thinking about this particular Bheeman.

Vampire Owl: Well, it is what we are supposed to do, right?

Vampire Bat: It is what we always do without failing.

[Gets a blueberry cake and three glasses of mango shake].

What is the movie about? :: Sanjeev Shankar a.k.a. Bheeman (Kunchacko Boban) is in a relationship with Blessy (Vincy Aloshious), but it isn’t really among his first relationships or the last, as she does get married – he doesn’t have any regret about the same. His idea of marriage is closely related to a large amount of dowry it is for the same that he requires a good road in front of him house. The present path is a small one, allowing only one motor-bike or scooter to squeeze through the area. When his mother has health problems, he is forced to carry her all the way through the small paths which led to and from his house. When the local ward councillor, Reetha (Divya M Nair) talks to him in detail about it, and assures the people of the area about the possibilities of the municipality granting some government fund and building a road if everyone out there was willing to give a part of their land for the purpose. Most of the people do agree to it, and they also make the hesitant Gulaan Paul (Naseer Sankranthi) accept the proposal, after Bheeman has a long talk with him.

So, what happens with the events here as we just keep looking? :: But municipality is not the only place from where they should get the approval. There are more than enough approvals required from different government department for we always have KWA, KSEB and many other government institutions along with the usual stuff that comes into the picture. Then, there are two plots, one which is required to give a lot of land for the purpose, belonging to Dr Cederic Simon (Ashvin Mathew) who has settled outside, and is not really bothered about having a good road in front of his house where he rarely stays. Then there is Oothampilly Kostheppu (Jinu Joseph) and his brother Oothampilly Caspar (Bhagath Manuel) who has zero percent interest in all of these, as they live where the path begins, and so big vehicles can enter their home from the other side. Kostheppu is also a greedy man who doesn’t give anything to anyone free, or even with discount. As there is a railway line passing nearby, Bheeman will also need the NOC from Indian Railways, for which he contacts Kinnari (Megha Thomas) to whom he is attracted. The list of requirements only get longer, and he wonders if this is even possible.

The defence of Bheemante Vazhi :: After two big thrillers Nizhal and Nayattu, Kunchako Boban is back to working on the family movies. Mohan Kumar Fans had him bringing the same after Virus and Anjaam Pathira, and here he leads well again. The not-so-good-hearted hero is the commoner who has to make some fine plans, and these form the core of the movie. The movie focuses on going sarcastic, and some of them do work. It also has the elements of realism embedded in it, except for the final moments when things seem to be rather strange. Disputes about paths and plots are common during these days, and these are the things which lead to the worst situations, as we do read in newspapers about brothers trying to kill each other and neighbours attacking one another in the name of the borders of their lands and the paths being cleared. Here, we have one man with inherent evil in nature being brought to light, even though there is no violence to support the same. The struggle which is shown here does feel real, and so do the people who fail to think from the viewpoint of others.

The claws of flaw :: The emotional side which we expected from this film is rather weak, and it is mostly due to slow progress of the movie, and the dragging feeling that it possesses, as this is the kind of content which deserves not more than one and half hours – that should be the maximum. The name of the movie also feels strange as the main character doesn’t have anything that reminds one of that grand character from Mahabharata – there is also no fight scenes to go with the same. Another confusion about the title is related to the feeling that this could be about the main character’s way, but it is not about that either. This is surely a better movie than Chemban Vinod Hose’s earlier film, Angamaly Diaries which was much appreciated for reasons unknown to me and everywhere whom I came up with, but still fails to rise higher. The beauty of the location is also not that much captured, and the world here is not presented in an interesting manner. There are also so many moments in the film which drags it down and makes slower and slower, with repetitions being everywhere. Then finally, by the end, everything seems to be forced, and problems are resolved in a flash.

Performers of the soul :: This one from Kunchacko Boban for the family audience after some time seems to be a different kind of return, as the dark shades of this particular character is more than what he usually come up with – he has been a thief in Varnyathil Aashanka, Shikkari Shambhu and Johny Johny Yes Appa, but this is another kind of the shade. Here, he is not a likable character in any ways, and this time, he is not steadfast in love, with the quality that has followed him in so many movies deserting him without trace. Even though he is indeed the protagonist, the one person who catch our attention the most is Jinu Joseph, who plays a perfect commoner antagonist – the troublesome neighbour who has no love for his people. He had two entirely different roles in Iyobinte Pusthakam and Rani Padmini, as well as others, and this one is completely divergent. The four main actresses, Divya M Nair, Megha Thomas, Vincy Aloshious and Chinnu Chandni shares the space, but those other than Divya are mostly forgettable. Chemban Vinod Jose, Binu Pappu and Nirmal Palazhi provide good support while Suraj Venjaramood’s nice entry doesn’t go on for a long enough time period. Bhagath Manuel and Naseer Sankranthi also have notable roles.

How it finishes :: The very slow and often dragging Bheemante Vazhi is somewhat entertaining in parts, and the interest for the movie should be different for each person. Yet, it makes a usual family movie which can be watched for New Year. As I finish this particular review, I also want to wish all of you a very Happy New Year. 2021 hasn’t been that much of a great year for all of us, and it can be considered even worse than 2020, because the latter was a fine, happy year till the end of March when the lock-down was finally declared. 2021 had also seen so many Corona virus related deaths, and it is only the usual depressing thing, for we have had many depressing things in the year. Well, still we see that humans haven’t learnt their lessons – there were those devastating floods and then the COVID-19 pandemic, and people are worse than ever. This movie has a few of such people too, as we look closely – if things go like what is happening right now, one can only be assured that humanity deserves the extinction which is coming to them, and it is only sad that some other species will also suffer due to them.
